The following table lists a variety of activities and tours organised by our Outdoor Committee - five in all. Thunderbird Park - a full-day trip to Mt Tamborine (Gold Coast Hinterland)

Choices: Thunderegg Fossicking; Tree Top Challenge; Canyon Flyer Zipline

If you are interested in a bit more of an adventurous day, perhaps Thunderbird Park is more up your alley. This magnificent property is located in the Gold Coast Hinterland, near Mt Tamborine, and is a rainforest playground full of exciting experiences for all age groups. Find treasure filled Thundereggs, tackle the High Ropes Course at the Treetop Challenge, or boost the adrenaline with a thrilling ride on the Canyon Flyer.

Thunderegg Fossicking: Thunderegg Fossicking is a unique activity for the whole family. You can discover your own hidden treasures from prehistoric volcanic lava in the world’s largest Thunderegg Mine. Admission includes a Souvenir Miner’s Permit and the use of a pick and bucket for collecting your treasures. http://www.thunderbirdpark.com/thunderegg-fossicking

Tree Top Challenge: The Thunderbird Park Tree Top Challenge is designed for the entire family ages 7 and up with amazing high ropes courses ranging from easy to extreme. The courses include 11 huge flying foxes and Tarzan swings. http://www.thunderbirdpark.com/treetop-challenge

Canyon Flyer: The Canyon flyer is the most extreme adventure attraction on the Gold Coast and is one of Australia’s largest guided Zipline Canopy Tours. The Zipline tour consists of 7 huge ziplines which traverse Cedar Creek Canyon multiple times before dropping into the canyon and flying just above the tree top canopy below. During the Zipline Tour you get more than 60m high and reach speeds of up to 70km per hour! The tour takes 3hrs to complete and also has a gread 4WD rainforest experience included.

Conference attendees wishing to attend this full day trip will be required to meet at Kelvin Grove State College at 8am to board buses. Buses will return by 3pm to allow time for everyone to go home and prepare for the Conference evening activity.

Australia Zoo – a full-day trip to the home of The Crocodile Hunter!

Australia Zoo is an iconic 100 acre zoo located on the Sunshine Coast near the Glass House Mountains. Australia Zoo is famous for its wildlife conservation work run by the late Steve Irwin and his family. Visitors to Australia Zoo will see a variety of birds, mammals, and reptiles, and can view crocodile feedings, hand feed elephants, see an African Safari and have hands on animal encounters. Conference attendees wishing to attend this full day trip will be required to meet at Kelvin Grove State College at 8am to board buses. Buses will leave the zoo at 2pm to return by 3pm, allowing time for everyone to go home and prepare for the Conference evening activity.

South Bank Parklands – a half-day trip to the city

Tours of QPAC / Museum & Science center / GOMA / Southbank Parklands / Conservatorium of Music

The South Bank Parklands are located at the southern bank of the Brisbane River directly opposite the city on the transformed site of Brisbane’s World Expo ’88. The parklands consist of a mixture of rainforest, water, grassed areas and plazas as well as features such as the riverfront promenade, the Streets Beach, the Grand Arbour and the Wheel of Brisbane, as well as restaurants, shops and fountains. South Bank is also surrounded by many of Brisbane’s Cultural precincts including The Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), the Museum and Science Centre, The Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA), and the Conservatorium of Music.

Conference attendees wishing to attend this half day trip will have the opportunity to participate in tours and excursions of one or more of the cultural precincts, or just enjoy exploring the parklands. You will be required to meet at Kelvin Grove State College at 8.30am then walk to the QUT bus station to board public transport down to South Bank Parklands. We will be returning to KGSC by 1-2pm. Please note: this trip includes a significant walking component and may not be suitable for the less mobile.

  • QPAC Tour - $10 Adult $9 Student  / GOMA - Free / Transport costs per person: $5 to catch the City Council bus from the QUT bus station.

Dreamworld and Whitewater World – a full-day trip to the famous Theme Park

Dreamworld is Australia’s biggest theme park located on the Gold Coast. It has a zoo and over 40 rides and attractions, including five roller coasters. The park is made up of several themed lands: Ocean Parade, DreamWorks Experience, Wiggles World, and many more which have a collection of rides, food outlets and merchandise shops. Conference attendees wishing to attend this full day trip will be required to meet at Kelvin Grove State Collage at 8:00am to board buses (cost $10). Buses will leave Dreamworld at 3pm and return to KGSC by 4:00pm to allow time for everyone to go home and prepare for the Conference evening activity.

 Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens and Lookout – a half-day trip which includes a Garden Tour

The Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mount Coot-tha (located on Mt Coot-tha Road at Toowong) are recognised as Queensland's premier subtropical botanic gardens, displaying distinctly different gardens arranged in thematic and geographical displays. Attendees can participate in relaxed and informative guided walks through the Gardens with Volunteer Guides. At the top of Mt Coot-tha is an amazing lookout offering spectacular panoramic views over the CBD all the way to Moreton Bay. A coffee and cake at the lookout will round out the perfect half day outing.

Conference attendees wishing to attend this half day trip will be required to meet at Kelvin Grove State College at 8.30am to board buses by 9am to the Botanical Gardens. We will be returning to KGSC by 1-2pm.

  • Garden entry and tours - free. Observe Brisbane from the lookout - free. Transport cost - $5

If you prefer to explore Brisbane on your own (rather than have fun with us on the bus!) we have a number of free and paid local attractions that you are welcome to visit. Please be advised that if you do wish to sight see on your own it is not an official Conference event and will not be covered by our insurance policies.
