While we have offered organised tour outings, you may wish to explore on your own. The following table lists a variety of free and paid alternatives to the organised activity that may be of interest. The description links take you to the attraction's website and the Map link opens up a Google map for your convenience.  As these are not organised by the Conference, please be advised that, if you do wish to sight see on your own, you will not be covered by our insurance policies.

Brisbane Planetarium (Free)

The Wheel of Brisbane ($20)

Southbank, Russell Street, South Brisbane QLD 4101
The Wheel of Brisbane is a Bussink R60 transportable Ferris wheel installation in Brisbane's Southbank. It is "almost" 60 metres tall. Could be included in visit to other Southbank attractions eg. Museum. Map

Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park (Free)

Lower River Terrace, South Brisbane
At the base of the Kangaroo Points cliff. The boardwalk starts just south of the Maritime Museum at Southbank. Map

New Farm Park (Free)

Beside the Brisbane River at New Farm. Eighteen hectares of superbly planned horticultural delights, flanked by a myriad of community and commercial precincts. Map

City Botanic Gardens (Free)

Alice St, Brisbane City
At the southern end of the city centre on the bend of the river, the gardens provide a beautiful and peaceful place to stroll and enjoy. Features include sculptures and ornamental ponds. Map

Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre (Free)

Located only 12km from Brisbane’s city centre. Drop into the Information Centre to find out about the varied experiences on offer in D’Aguilar National Park. While you’re there, take advantage of the spectacular panoramic viewing experience on a virtual lookout platform that showcases nearby national parks. Discover diverse wildlife at the Wildlife Centre where you can see and learn about some of the fascinating animals that share our backyards, as well as others that are more elusive.. Map

Boombana Rainforest walk (Free)

Mt Nebo Rd
Follow Waterworks Rd through The Gap and up onto Mt Nebo Rd. A minute’s drive from Jollys Lookout toward Mt Nebo, Boombana is a an off road picnic area (to the left when heading up the mountain) with a primitive open fire pit, amenities block and two very different walking tracks. Map

Jolly's Lookout (Free)

Just before the small township of Mt Nebo in the D’Aguilar range. Map

Mt Coot-tha lookout (Free)

Despite the hoards that descend on the lookout via tour bus, car, bicycle and so forth, there is plenty of space for everyone to have a look through the telescopes, check out the directional bollards, grab an ice-cream and a ledge space or wander the terraced gardens. The Summit has a licensed bar so the view can also be enjoyed with a beer or glass of wine. Map

Suttons Beach Park (Free)

With great views overlooking Moreton Island this park is filled with large lawn areas and shady trees. With many picnic facilities, shelters, barbeques and playground equipment, it is a popular destination for families on weekends and in peak seasons. Map

Roma Street Parkland (Free)

Expansive, acclaimed park just minutes from Kelvin Grove College featuring contemporary display gardens, waterways & an amphitheatre. Map

Newstead House ($12)

Newstead Park Cnr Breakfast Creek Rd & Newstead Ave, Brisbane City QLD 4006
Brisbane oldest surviving home, established in 1846. Has sweeping views of the Brisbane River. An historic house furnished to reflect the late Victorian period. Map

The Caloundra Esplanade (Free)

The Esplanade, Caloundra QLD 4551
On the foreshore at Caloundra, located 90 kilometres north of Brisbane, an hours drive, overlooking the Pumicestone Passage and the tip of Bribie Island. Map
